How to clean a velvet sofa and keep it clean
At BgPrane, we believe that the interior of our home is a reflection of our inner self. Velvet fabric is a pleasure that few people dare to use. But if the opportunity arises, purchasing a velvet sofa will change your living space forever, but you need to know how to keep it clean and how to maintain it.
If you have decided to make the luxurious decision to add such a luxurious piece of furniture to your home, you will need to know how to take care of the velvet sofa in the right way.
What are Velvet Damasks?
To know how to properly care for a velvet sofa, you need to know what the material is. In the past, it was made from silk, which in itself is quite an expensive material.
Velvet requires more materials and is woven in two thicknesses. The complex process gives the fabric its characteristic softness, hence the expression “soft as velvet”.
Nowadays, besides the classic silk velvet, there are many other synthetic or natural materials that can be used to make velvet. Some of the more budget friendly ones it can be made from are:
Cotton
Polyester (often a blend of cotton and polyester)
Viscose
Wave
Linen
Mohair
A luxury rarity
Pure silk velvet is increasingly difficult to find these days. Even if you come across real velvet, its purchase is very expensive. Now it is more often made from viscose, also known as rayon. However, if you do buy a velvet sofa, regardless of its type, you will need to know how best to clean it.
So, first, check the label of your plush sofa and check:
Materials from which it is made;
Care instructions;
Cleaning instructions.
Natural fiber velvet is much more delicate than synthetic. If your velvet sofa is made of synthetic materials, you can easily steam clean it at home, as synthetic velvet is more durable, with less tendency, fading and damage than natural fiber velvet. If the velvet is made of natural materials, we advise you to call a professional upholstery cleaning team to do this job.
How to properly care for the velvet sofa?
Although velvet is considered a delicate material, it is actually quite durable if you take care of it properly. That’s why it’s extremely important to learn how to care for your velvet sofa the right way. The best thing about velvet is that it is like fine wine – it only gets better with age.
Caring for velvet furniture is actually quite easy. The way to do it is to not pass it by in the daily cleaning of your home.
When vacuuming the floor or living room carpet, quickly switch to the upholstery cleaning attachment and remove all dust, crumbs, fur and whatever else from your plush sofa.
Get a velvet brush. First you need to understand how velvet fibers are woven. Clean your couch by following this direction.
When performing either of the two tasks above, you may come across creases, unnatural lines, or even old blemishes that you missed. This is a good reason to buy an upholstery steam cleaner.
If you’re not sure about the fibers your plush sofa is made of, or you know it’s made from natural materials, you might want to consider hiring professional cleaners. They will clean your sofa using a dry cleaning method that will not cause any damage to your beautiful piece of furniture.
Stain removal
No one in this world is immune to stains, not even your plush sofa. If you have pets, kids, or just a messy family member, this will happen sooner or later. So when it does, you need to be prepared.
The most important thing is to clean your stains on time. If they have time to dry and soak into the velvet fabric, removing them can become almost impossible. Here are our tips on how to deal with a fresh stain:
Paper towels
The first thing you should do when a new stain appears on your couch is to grab some paper towels. Place them carefully on the stain. Do not rub or press as this can cause it to further penetrate the fibers of the sofa. Leave it like this for 5-10 minutes to absorb as much as possible.
Prepare the mixture
Now you need to prepare a cleaning mixture for your velvet sofa. We suggest you prepare a deep bowl. Pour 100 ml of lemon juice into the bowl and add one tablespoon of baking soda. The mixture will foam, creating foam and bubbles on top. Dip a cloth into the foamy part of the solution and apply to the stain.
The other option for creating a solution is to pour 50ml of water into a glass or bowl and add a few drops of liquid detergent. Agitate quickly to create a lather and use only the bubbly lather to clean the velvet upholstery.
Wipe away
Whichever mixture you use, blot the stain gently with a clean cleaning cloth. Continue mopping until the stain is no longer visible.
Now leave the upholstery in a well-ventilated area. After it is completely dry, use a vacuum cleaner to clean the surface. This will keep it looking smooth and make sure the stain doesn’t stand out from the rest of the velvet sofa.
A few tips from the pros
When placing your velvet sofa in the living room, choose a location where direct sunlight cannot reach it.
If you have children or pets, it may be worth considering putting a protective cover over the velvet sofa to avoid damage and abrasion.
Your velvet sofa may or may not have cushions. If there are any, rotate them regularly.
Always read the laundry labels before undertaking any cleaning process on your plush sofa.
In case you find an old stain on your sofa, deal with it with the help of a steam cleaner or contact the professional cleaners.
If ever in doubt, turn to professional upholstery cleaners. You don’t want to cause unnecessary damage to your luxury furniture.
