How to clean greasy stains from our upholstered furniture?

How to clean greasy stains from our upholstered furniture?

Your mother has always told you not to eat on the sofa and at BgPrane we agree with her. But sometimes it’s too tempting to lie down with a bowl of buttered popcorn or enjoy dinner in front of the screen. With this pleasure comes the risk of greasy stains appearing on the upholstery of your furniture.

You may be used to cleaning grease from your clothes, but cleaning it from the upholstery of your favorite sofa can be a little more challenging. Knowing the right approach to cleaning an oily stain from upholstered furniture will help you restore the former shine of your favorite sofa or armchair.

Removal of visible fat

If there is dried grease on the upholstery, carefully scrape it off the fabric. The plastic knife does a good job of scraping off the grease without damaging the upholstery. As you scrape, avoid spreading the grease beyond where it has already been.

Then wipe the area with a dry or damp cloth to absorb as much grease as possible. This will not remove all of the fat, but it will remove a large portion of it before moving on to other methods of fat removal.

Fat absorption

Before cleaning the stain, absorb as much of the grease as possible with baking soda or cornstarch. Sprinkle a generous amount of the baking soda or cornstarch over the entire grease stain, making sure there is a thick layer over the area.

Wait 15 – 20 minutes for the baking soda to draw the grease out of the fabric. Vacuum any soda or starch off the couch. Inspect the stained area to see if it still looks greasy and proceed with additional cleaning depending on the type of fabric.

Attention! Cleaning according to fabric type

Different types of upholstery are cleaned in different ways. You can find information on the label of your sofa about the composition of the damask, the fabric used and what detergents to use to clean a certain type of stain.

Additional cleaning methods

Depending on the type of furniture upholstery, use additional cleaning agents to remove remaining grease stains. Some damasks only need a small amount of dish detergent to fight grease. Apply it to a clean cloth and apply to the stain. Rinse off the detergent with a clean, damp cloth and allow the stain to dry. Repeat if necessary and after drying the area still shows a trace of grease.

For another type of damask, use a dry cleaning solvent designed for sofas. Follow the instructions on the package to clean the greasy stain. It is generally not recommended to use water for this type of damask as it can leave marks or damage the upholstery.

Most common types of greasy stains on upholstery

The sofa with a fabric damask is a soft and warm place to snuggle up after a long and hard day. This comfortable spot also takes the brunt of everyday life, which can result in greasy pizza stains, spilled soda stains, or buttered popcorn stains on the upholstery.

Removing grease stains from that favorite seating area can extend the life of the sofa and make it look brand new.

Greasy food stain

There is hardly a person who does not enjoy a slice of warm pizza on the sofa in front of the TV. But this enjoyment comes with the corresponding risk of greasy stains on the upholstery.

If the stain is relatively fresh and hot, carefully remove any fallen sauce, cheese, or other additive. Wipe away any excess sauce that has stuck to the fibers of the couch. Use a paper or terry cloth to easily remove grease from the surface of the sofa. Be careful not to let the pizza stain stick to the upholstery fibers.

Soda – one spoonful and you’re done!

Sprinkle baking soda on the affected area and in the surrounding space about an inch after the spread of the pizza grease stain. Allow the baking soda to work undisturbed for 15 to 20 minutes.

Clean the soda from the sofa fabric using the vacuum cleaner attachment. The attachment brushes will suck up any remaining baking soda that has set deep into the fibers and lift any subsequent greasy stains that may appear long after cleaning is complete. This can be the hardest part of cleaning a pizza grease stain: making sure all the grease is removed from the stained area.

Follow with dry cleaning solvent. Gently press a slightly damp cloth into the upholstery. Start at the outer edge of the stain and work towards the center to make sure it is covered and cleaned completely.

Removing cow butter stains

A movie and popcorn to munch on while lounging on your super cozy couch is a favorite weekend pastime. But it can also lead to small oily pimples

Cow butter differs from other fats in the process of removal. It can be more difficult to remove and requires a few more steps.

The first step is to cover the stain with a thick layer of cornstarch or talcum powder. They are preferable to baking soda because they have a better absorbent factor that will spread around the oil while the baking soda will stay on the stain.

Vacuum the substance with an upholstery attachment after it has had a chance to sit on the stain for at least 15 minutes.

With a damp cloth, apply some dishwashing liquid to the stain and gently rub it into the stain. Work from the outside of the stain and move toward the center.

Cover the area with a clean cloth and let it sit for an hour or two. Wipe the soap off the dishes with a damp cloth.

If a shadow of a stain remains, wipe the area with dry cleaning solvent.

This process may need to be repeated to completely remove the stain.

In conclusion

Over time, the grease hardens, making it difficult to remove. Thus, it leaves permanent marks on the upholstery. Oil stains will not only affect the appearance of your upholstered furniture, but over time will cause permanent damage to both the appearance and strength of your sofa.

These steps to remove grease stains from upholstery are very easy to follow, and the necessary ingredients can be found in every household. The more equipped households even have steam cleaners with which they can effectively remove greasy stains from your upholstered furniture!
